English Translation

¹ In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. ² Now the earth was nothing and empty; and darkness was over the surface of the abyss. And the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

³ And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. ⁴ And seeing that the light was good, God divided the light from the darkness. ⁵ God named the light “day”, and the darkness He named “night”. And there was evening and there was morning - the first day.

⁶ And God said, “Let there be a firmament between the waters, to divide the waters from the waters. ⁷ So God made the firmament and divided the waters beneath the firmament from the waters which were over. And it was so. ⁸ God named the firmament “sky”. And there was evening and there was morning - the second day.

⁹ And God said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place, so that the dry land will be seen.” And it was so. ¹⁰ God named the dry land “earth”; and the collection of waters He called “seas”. And God saw that it was good.

¹¹ Then God said, “Let the earth sprout grass, seed-bearing plants and fruit trees, each bearing fruit with seed like its kind. And it was so. ¹² The earth produced grass, seed-bearing plants after their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed after their kinds. And God saw that it was good. ¹³ And there was evening, and there was morning - the third day.

¹⁴ And God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the sky to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for the times and days and years, ¹⁵ And let them be for lights in the firmament of the sky to shine upon the earth” And it was so. ¹⁶ God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the smaller light to rule the night. And He made the stars. ¹⁷ God set them in the firmament of the sky to shine upon the earth, ¹⁸ to rule over the day and the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. ¹⁹ And there was evening, and three was morning - the fourth day.

²⁰ And God said, “Let the waters teem with living creatures, and let birds fly over the earth in the open firmament of the sky.” ²¹ So God created the great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, which the waters teemed after their kinds, and every winged bird after his kind. And God saw that it was good. ²² Then God blessed them and said, “Bear fruit and become many and fill the waters of the seas, and let birds become many on the earth.” ²³ And there was evening, and there was morning - the fifth day.

²⁴ And God said, “Let the earth produce living creatures after their kinds: cattle, land crawlers, and wild animals after their kinds.” And it was so. ²⁵ God made the living creatures of the earth after their kinds, the cattle after their kinds, and everything that crawls upon the earth after its kind. And God saw that it was so.

²⁶ Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likening, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth itself, and every creature that crawls upon the earth.

²⁷ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

²⁸ God blessed them and said to them, “Bear fruit and multiply, and fill the earth and master it; rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth.”

²⁹ Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every seed bearing plant on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed. They will be yours for food. ³⁰ And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the air and every creature that crawls upon the earth - everything that has the breath of life in it - I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

³¹ And God saw all that He had made, and indeed, it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning - the sixth day.
